Description

Cognac is a type of brandy that was first created in the 16th century when Dutch settlers traveled to France to purchase salt, wood, and wine. The merchants were then faced with problems when trying to preserve the wine, on their return journey. The solution to this concern was to distill the wine into eau-de-vie, to maximize its quality.

Meukow Cognac was founded by brothers Auguste-Christophe and Gustav Meukow who were sent to France to secure the supply of cognac by Tsar Alexander ll of Russia but after several voyages, the 2 brothers decided to set up a commercial office in the town of Cognac and founded the A.C Meukow & Co. House on August 1st, 1862.

Fast forward to today, Cognac is produced by twice distilling white wines produced in any of the designated growing regions and once distillation is complete, it must be aged in Limousin oak casks for at least two years before it can be sold to the public.

To be classified as a VSOP, the youngest component in a blend must be aged for a minimum of 4 years in oak. The House Meukow blends various vintages from the six cognac regions, using casks aged a year younger than required to create their VSOP.

The Meukow VSOP Superior product has been reviewed as an exceptionally smooth and sweet cognac offering candied orange, apple, plum and rose. Additionally, Meukow explains that their VSOP Superior cognac provides powerful leather and licorice with spicy coffee and vanilla background notes.

Having won multiple prestigious competitions and award tastings around the world, this cognac is a highly suggested choice for connoisseurs seeking a light to medium body cognac that is described as having a soft but dry, vanilla custard like finish.

While cognac is often advised to drink neat and may make you envision it being served in a snifter by the fire on a cold winter’s eve, the spirits nuance and complexity lends itself to a lot more. Cognac can be found as the primary foundation of many cocktails such as the Sidecar, Bermuda Highball and French 75 therefore making this a truly diverse spirit.
